How to Avoid Car Shipping Scams and Bait-and-Switch Quotes
Warning signs to watch for when booking auto transport, and simple checks that protect your money.
Common warning signs
- A quote far below every other quote.
- Pressure to pay a large non-refundable deposit right away.
- No written contract, or terms that differ from what you were told.
- Demands for cash-only payment to the driver with no written price.
- Reviews describing price increases after booking or missed pickups.
Checks before you book
- Look up the company on the FMCSA (USDOT/MC number) and the BBB.
- Read recent 1-star reviews on Google, Trustpilot and Yelp.
- Get the total price, deposit, cancellation and payment terms in writing.
- Pay with a card when possible so you can dispute a charge.
At pickup and delivery
Inspect the car with the driver, note any damage on the Bill of Lading, and take dated photos. Do not sign a clean delivery receipt if there is new damage.
Compare companies side by side. See public Google, Trustpilot, BBB and Yelp ratings, recent 1-star reviews and written terms on our comparison page.
